A 2-Week Moisture Campaign

To cure dry skin and chapped lips permanently!

Some things are just obnoxiously persistent; like a neighbor’s yapping dog, robo-calls from companies you’ve never heard of, constant political campaigning—and dry lips or skin.

It seems that dry skin persists even if you wash with gentle soaps and cleansers, use facial moisturizers night and day, apply cream on your hands frequently, and constantly put Vaseline on your lips—

---WAIT, STOP RIGHT THERE! Vaseline on your lips? Well, that’s a big problem because petroleum jelly (Vaseline) and waxy lip balms are moisture barriers; they keep moisture OUT. That means no moisture is going to get to your lips or anywhere else you apply Vaseline and you are actually – no joke—making your chapped lips and skin WORSE. If you use Vaseline or wax-based lip balms, you must—MUST—first apply a good moisturizing agent that soaks into the skin. Then if you apply Vaseline or waxy balm the moisture will be locked in.

A superb moisturizing product for the lips is the  Platinum Lip Butter that comes in five yummy flavors that kids also love—which will encourage them to use it. Another good choice for lips and other dry areas is  Emu Oil—which is a perfect oil to put under Vaseline. I usually start by applying Emu Oil to my lips in the morning then switch to the Lip Butter during the day. Because my lips tend to get dry rather often, I always keep one in my purse and another in my car.

As for your never-ending dry skin, let’s do a focused Moisture Campaign for a couple of weeks and send your scaly skin right back where it belongs (like on a fish).

Only Fish Need Scales, Scaly Skin

For this campaign, I propose that for two weeks, you stop using anything that could possibly irritate or dry your skin: Stop all treatments, scrubs, exfoliating lotions, etc. Use only a gentle cleanser such as the  Gentle Cleansing Lotion (which is also good for sensitive skin) and exfoliate gently only with a washcloth—be sure to use a clean, fresh washcloth each time because bacteria grows rapidly and really loves used washcloths.

Every evening during this intense two-week moisture campaign, thoroughly cleanse with warm water (never hot) and apply pure  Nano Hyaluronic Acid with Grape Stem Cells , which is a powerful humectant (definition: a moisture-binding ingredient). Don’t let the word “acid” fool you; Hyaluronic Acid is not like glycolic or other exfoliating acids!) Important: For even better results, apply the Hyaluronic Acid before your skin is completely dry : In other words, you want your skin to be slightly moist after patting off excess water from your cleansing and rinsing; this will give the Hyaluronic Acid extra moisture to which to bind.

Now that your skin is nice and hydrated, lock in the moisture by massaging on a non-comedogenic (won’t block pores) oil moisturizer, like coconut oil or  Emu Oil (my personal favorite). Blot off any excess oil, and get a good night’s sleep.

Each morning, after you cleanse and apply Hyaluronic Acid, you can either use oil again to lock it in, or, if you don’t like the feel of oil under your makeup, use a good moisturizer, (preferably with sunscreen) that does NOT contain any exfoliating properties—the  Advanced Care Moisturizer is a good candidate, along with the  Cotz Sensitive Skin Suncreen.

If you have extremely dry skin, you should re-apply moisturizer throughout the day, but do not cleanse your skin more than twice a day because you don’t want to strip away your natural oils—there really is such as thing as “over-cleansing” the skin! If you will be away from home, consider bringing some of your makeup for touching-up after re-applying moisturizer.

If you have dry patches on your body—such as your hands, knees and elbows—add them to this two-week regime, too. You might also like to look at this article:  “Hands and Lips—a Quick Fix,” for a fast and temporary way to fix those spots.

It takes 7 – 14 days for your skin cells to completely regenerate, so after your first week of the Moisture Campaign, you might like do to a one-night mild exfoliation with a product like the  AntiOxidant Enzyme Mask or the Diamond Dermabrasion scrub before launching into the second week.

Just as important as treating your skin to extra moisture, you need to treat your body by drinking plenty of water. Alcohol and caffeine is dehydrating, so take that into consideration and consider either cutting back or drinking extra water.

After two weeks of treating your skin this special hydration plan, you should have no irritated or flaking skin at all! If you still do, you might want to consult a dermatologist to rule out any medical conditions.

As you return to using your regular products again (peels, preparations, retinol, etc), go slowly and don’t over-do it. Is it possible that one or more of your products is a culprit that caused your dry-skin problems? Try adding in only one product or treatment at a time to see how your skin responds before adding in another. If you discover that you have been using the wrong products for your skin, such as a too-strong peel, or too many exfoliating products, consider using products designed for dry skin on the  Dry Skin page. Or maybe use certain products less frequently; for example, it takes time for your skin to adapt to  Retinol products, so use it every 2 -3 days instead of every night. And instead of using a strong peel, try a gentle  Mandelic Acid peel instead and only use it every 4 – 6 weeks.
